With less than 25% of the student body from Ohio, Case has become more of a national university than a local one. Similarly, with less than half of the student body in undergraduate programs, Case has also become more of a graduate school than an undergraduate one.

None-the-less, with around 5,000 undergraduate students and 82% of them living on campus, a vibrant Greek system, state-of-the-art facilities and a nationally ranked set of STEM and business programs, Case is one impressive institution.

Particularly well respected for their Nursing and Engineering Programs as well as their schools of Law, Medicine, Dentistry, and Business, Case has some of the best professional programs in the state. It hasn’t hurt that they have taken advantage of their University Circle location in Cleveland near many cultural, business, educational, and health care institutions in order to provide students clinical, internship, co-op, and research opportunities.

Case has plenty to be proud of!

Ohio’s Small, Private Colleges with Big Time Professional Programs

Many of Ohio’s private colleges were formed in the 1800s as denominationally affiliated liberal arts colleges. These Liberal Arts colleges typically educated students from affluent families with the goal of helping them become well rounded, learned citizens with broad general knowledge and intellectual capabilities. They tended to be small, residential, collegial, and the curriculum included arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences (as opposed to professional or technical subjects). In a few of my prior posts, we looked at the renowned “Big 5 Liberal Arts Colleges of Ohio.”

The “professionals” in the early days, were educated and groomed through some combination of trade schools, technical schools, and/or apprenticeships. Of course things have changed. For one thing, professions have become much more complex, specialized, resource intensive, and demanding – can you say, “engineering, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law, business, and computer science?” For another thing, jobs have become more technical, often requiring professional education for entry. Thus the practical notion of earning a living has moderated the demand for a purely liberal arts education. The professional programs of today compete for our brightest students and challenge them with demanding academic programs. In many of today’s professional programs, yesterday’s liberal arts are transformed into “general education requirements.”

So, what has happened to all these small, Ohio liberal arts colleges that aren’t part of the “Big 5?” Well, the short answer is that they have, to different degrees and in different ways, migrated into adding professional programs…with varying results. So, let’s first take a look at a small set of Ohio’s smaller, private colleges that have found a way to become professional program powerhouses while still maintaining a strong liberal arts core.

Cleveland Institute of Art has been educating professional artists and designers since 1882. CIA is located in the heart of University Circle, Cleveland’s cultural center. University Circle is home to over 8,000 students from Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and CIA. The area abounds with cultural opportunities including Cleveland Botanical Gardens, Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, and six museums including the world renowned Cleveland Museum of Art.

CIA is one of 40 Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) in the U.S. and the 2nd largest of 3 in Ohio. A dedicated art school is different than majoring in art at a comprehensive university. At CIA, students are surrounded by artists and have the advantage of taking courses across disciplines as needed to support their work.

Nationally known for their programs in Industrial Design and Biomedical Art, CIA offers 15 majors including growing majors in Game Design, Illustration, and Animation. A close relationship with Case Western Reserve University opens courses, team projects, and co-curricular activities, across schools.
