Ohio’s Conservatories of Music: University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music

By | Ohio's Conservatories of Music | No Comments

Ranked nationally for both undergraduate and graduate music programs, the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is housed in Memorial Hall, a stateley gothic structure divided into studio, classroom, and performing space. Formed in 1867, CCM is the only public university Conservatory in the state and, as  a result, offers a much broader set of offerings including programs in Electronic Media; Ensembles and Conducting; Keyboard Studies; Theatre Arts; Production and Arts Administration; Performance; Composition; Musicology; and Music Theory. CCM boasts an impressive roster of over 150 internationally known faculty who work with students hailing from all over the world. They are also an “All Steinway” school with 165 new Steinway pianos. Rumor has it that CCM’S order of 165 Steinways was the largest single order in Steinway’s history. Now that’s something to sing about!

The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), another of Ohio’s “All Steinway” conservatories is located in University Circle, the heart of culture and education near downtown Cleveland. The home of the Cleveland Orchestra, Severance Hall is located only blocks from campus. CIM is small and selective, admitting only 30% of applicants, but boasts an excellent reputation across the board. They are particularly well known for music performance in strings and woodwinds and over half of CIM’s faculty are past or current members of the world-class Cleveland Orchestra. Specializing in undergraduate education and recognized nationally as a top 20 (top 10 in some ratings) conservatory of music, CIM has a lot to offer.

Ohio’s Conservatories of Music: Oberlin Conservatory of Music

By | Ohio's Conservatories of Music | No Comments

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music is the oldest Conservatory of Music in the United States. It was founded in 1833 and is affiliated with Oberlin College. Oberlin’s Conservatory is typically ranked as one of the top Conservatories in the country and is particularly well known for its programs in contemporary and baroque music as well as its unique Technology in Music and Related Arts Program (TIMARA). Oberlin’s conservatory has an enrollment of around 600 and admission is very competitive. Considered an “All Steinway” conservatory, Oberlin is the proud owner of 233 Steinway pianos. Some Conservatory students double major in music with another major offered at Oberlin College – time to completion is five years for most students. Architecturally unique, Bibbins Hall, the home of the Conservatory, was designed by Minoru Yamasaki who also designed the prior World Trade Center buildings. Bibbins houses 40 studios and 10 classrooms.

Ohio’s Renowned Conservatories of Music

By | Ohio's Conservatories of Music | No Comments

We hope you enjoyed strolling through just a few of Ohio’s unique college majors. In a similar vein, let’s set up camp and take a look at Ohio’s Conservatories of Music. Consider that there are only 53 public and private conservatories in the United States and Ohio has five of them, including a few that are among the best in the land.

A college “Conservatory of Music” is dedicated to training students who have a passion for music and plan for music to be central to their professional life. In choosing a conservatory, students look for a college with a strong reputation in training musicians in their chosen instrument or area of interest for a professional career. Conservatory students have opportunities to perform, conduct, or have their music played by others. This may be solo or as part of an ensemble, band, or orchestra. Some conservatories exclusively focus on music while others may expand to include musical drama and/or dance. Most conservatories focus on Western classical music and a broad range of related instruments, but some include jazz, world music, or pop music.

Alternatively, “university music departments” have historically placed more emphasis on the academic study of music instead of performance and their graduates are less likely to pursue professional careers in music. However, this varies from institution to institution with performance being emphasized more than in the past.

So enough talk, let’ take a look at these Ohio jewels.

Happy Thanksgiving

CBA “World” Headquarters in Old Worthington

The thing I have always enjoyed about Thanksgiving is that it offers an opportunity to disconnect, reflect, and spend some time with family. No presents…no obligatory commitments…oh, and the Cowboys always play on Thanksgiving day. All-in-all, many good things indeed. This Thanksgiving is unique in that College Bound Advantage is about to open for business following a six month building process that included visiting over 50 Ohio colleges and universities. We are already working with clients however, and my son Brandon and I are sensing the significant change that is about to occur as the way we spend our time shifts from building knowledge capital, organizing web sites, traveling, writing, and opening an office to working with clients. What a nice adventure this has been and now the fun really begins.

To those of you who have discovered our blog, thanks for reading and….stay with us….next week we will adding the University of Findlay to our look at Ohio private colleges with particularly strong professional programs. In the mean time, enjoy your family, get outside and have some fun, and try to avoid the stores. Like REI employees (remember, our website is organized around backpacking metaphors), we are choosing to OptOutside. In fact, I am giving everyone in the office Black Friday off – easy for me to say…it’s just Brandon and I. You’ll find us hiking at Highbanks Metro Park, at least until we get lost and have to be airlifted out. Best wishes and Happy Thanksgiving!

Ohio’s Big 5 Liberal Arts Colleges: Denison University

By | Ohio's liberal arts colleges | No Comments

img_4519

Denison University is a selective, private, residential liberal arts college located on top of a beautiful hill in the quaint village of Granville. Granville is only 30 miles east of Columbus and thus offers access to the amenities of a large metropolitan area. Dennison was founded in 1831 making it Ohio’s second oldest liberal arts college (Kenyon College was founded in 1824). Denison is a member of Ohio’s nationally recognized “Big Five” liberal arts colleges.

The student body is diverse in a number of ways. First, about a quarter of students identify as multi-cultural and another 25% are first generation college students. Additionally, less than 25% of the students come from Ohio.

Nearly all of Denison’s 2,200 students live on campus. Sports are popular and the university offers NCAA Division III varsity sports, intramurals, and club sports. Now, we’re not talking just any club sport – how does Fencing, Rugby, Squash, Ice Hockey, Clay Target, Equestrian, Quidditch, Rock Climbing, Sailing, and Zumba sound? If that doesn’t sound interesting, perhaps the other 180 student organizations might capture your imagination.

In terms of academics, Philosophy, Politics, and Economics is a unique interdisciplinary major that attracts strong students, many of whom later migrate to graduate business or law school. The fastest growing major is Cinema and the newest is Data Analytics.
